Marine Corps League Scholarship Presentation – April 17, 2023

Marines present leadership awards to seniors!

The Villages Marine Corps League Detachment 1267, the Colonel Phillip C. Delong Detachment, has been awarding leadership awards for the past sixteen years.  On Monday, April 17, 2023, Fred Geier, Leadership Scholarship Chairman, presented this year’s six Leadership Scholarships.  This year’s award winners included three Village High School seniors and three Marine Corps League family members’ grandchildren.  The award recipients are:  Kelly Chan-Pong: Villages High School; Sophia Hurtt: Villages High School; **Alexander Skelton: Arizona; **Gabrielle Chilton: Georgia; **Sarah Statelman: Virginia; Eden Livaich: Villages High School.  These seniors all demonstrated outstanding leadership skills and reflect great credit to their families, classmates and their community.

Colonel Fred Geier stated, “The Villages Marine Corps League is proud to offer this scholarship to The Villages High School and Marine Corps League Detachment family members.  This award is different from others, it’s about leadership; and there’s one thing Marines appreciate and that’s a good leader.”  “It gives our Villages Marine Corps League Detachment the opportunity to select the recipient on merits other than just scholastic average.  We are looking for that “diamond in the rough” who has demonstrated his or her potential leadership qualities to become a great leader in the future.”

This year’s applicants were exceptional.  These young adults will go on and represent our communities as the future leaders of our country.  Including this year’s recipients, The Marine Corps League Det #1267 has now awarded over $92,600 total to the past eighty-eight award recipients.

The Villages Marine Corps League meets every third Monday of the month at 7:00PM at Bacall Recreation Center.  The Colonel Phillip C. Delong Detachment is active in several other charitable causes and is always looking for those former Marines and Corpsmen to join The Villages Marine Corps League.  For additional information about the Villages MCL, contact Nathan Pratt at 904-553-3500.
